We present a comprehensive description of Hydra, the largest darknet marketplace in the world, until its shutdown in April 2022. We document the main features of Hydra, such as dead-drop delivery, feedback and reputation system, escrow, and dispute resolution. Using data scraped from the platform, we quantitatively examine the marketplace’s scale and structure. We find that it had been highly competitive and also allowed the wholesale trade of drugs and precursors. We contribute to drug cryptomarket research by studying an unprecedentedly large non-Western marketplace that existed substantially longer than any other known darknet market.
Vendors on these sites can post listings for everything from narcotics to stolen credit cards and hacking tools, with payment accepted exclusively in crypto-assets. Besides drugs, the anonymous buyers and sellers on Hydra traded stolen financial information such as credit card data, fraudulent identification documents, counterfeit bills, and money laundering and mixing services. And like Silk Road, criminals conducted transactions in cryptocurrency, with Hydra’s operators getting a commission for every completed transaction. While the study is based on historical data, we showed that examining dark market counterfeits in more detail can contribute to our understanding of the counterfeit market.
Understanding the Darknet Market
At the same time, malicious actors on the Dark Web adapt and innovate new ways to thwart identification and prosecution. However, the number of darknet marketplaces declined in the last few years. For example, between 2017 and 2021, law enforcement authorities took down three big marketplaces, namely DarkMarket, UniCC, and AlphaBay. However, drug market revenues soared by 35.7% between 2016 and 2021, indicating a bigger transaction size.
This trust factor is based on mistrust, which becomes essential in illegal trade processes (Przepiorka et al., 2017). Data protection, privacy, and legal information form another necessary category of trust factors. Registration data, legal documents, and guidelines indicating buyer and seller rights and obligations are also listed here (Karimov & Brengman, 2014). Providing information on privacy protection is essential for legally operating web markets.
Following this link provides in-depth information for estimated dosage, preparation methods, and description and duration of the product’s effects. Users who purchase products can provide feedback ratings on quality, delivery, and service on a scale from 1-5 to further establish vendor credibility. The veracity of the information posted is unclear and could easily be falsified. For security and anonymity purposes the marketplace encourages all users to install a PGP key and to use two-factor authentication for accounts.
The darknet market refers to a collection of online marketplaces situated on the dark web, where goods and services are traded anonymously. These markets function outside the realm of traditional commerce and are often associated with illegal activities.
Days later RuTor was targeted for another round of cyber attacks, this time by Killnet. Amid the cyber warfare between those vying to succeed Hydra, Russia’s drug trade, most of it orchestrated via darknet marketplaces continues almost in plain sight. Of course, it is impossible to cover every type of the websites published in the dark web. Hence, let’s focus on the main subject of the article, the darknet markets. Obviously, special places to trade illicit goods or render illegal services have existed since the beginning of times. But with the help from technological progress now you can do that comfortably in your chair instead of going to some suspicious alley in the back of the street.
